Thanksgiving Butterball Turkey Giveaway-CLOSED

November 7, 2011

Thanksgiving is coming soon and I can’t wait! I love getting together with family and friends to hang out, visit and most of all enjoying the delicious food. I especially love the turkey and dressing. When Thanksgiving comes around my husband gets excited because he loves cooking the turkey. He says a turkey is so big compared to a chicken that he feels  like Fred Flintstone cooking up a dinosaur chicken. His favorite way to cook a turkey is to smoke it. I love the rich and spicy taste he gives the turkey.

When he prepares the turkey he starts the day before Thanksgiving and puts the turkey in a seasoned brine bath with apple cider, garlic salt, onion powder, worcestershire sauce, molasses, pepper, salt, thyme, bay leaves, cayenne and habanero peppers. Yes, we like our turkey spicy. Then on Thanksgiving day he takes the turkey out of the brine rinses it and pats it dry with paper towels. Next he butterflies the turkey. Then he takes salt, pepper, garlic salt, melted butter and olive oil and rubs the outside of the turkey and underneath the skin. Once all this is done he puts it in the smoker and cooks the turkey. After a few hours the turkey is done, he tents the turkey with foil to let it rest and then he carves it up for serving. Before I met my husband I wasn’t a big turkey fan, but the way he prepares it, I now love turkey, especially the next day in a big, fat and juicy turkey sandwich. Yummy!

I am all excited for Thanksgiving and to eat all the wonderful dishes that will go along with the Turkey.  I hope you will enjoy it as much I will.  Enjoy!!!

I don’t know if my first post happened – I had to reboot my computer. the one and only time I’ve made a Turkey breast was about 10-12 years ago. I was by myself for Thanksgiving and really wanted to try this recipe in the Cooking Light magazine for Mahongany chicken. It was sooooo good!

I think this is the recipe – it sounds sooo good right now.

well, you may not believe this, but many years ago , Many years ago… I had some of the moistest and best tasting turkey roast I have ever had. I snuck into the kitchen to speak with the cook.. She told me the secret was cooking your turkey in a large brown paper bag! No joking… it really works… its awesome… I now do that with roast chicken as well.
After cleaning the turkey and removing the inside package, you then prepare your skin and interior with the spice and veggies you love…( as most of you know it is not healthy to eat anything that has been cooked in the inside of your bird… that includes stuffing.. since I learned about bacteria forming , I make stuffing separately, or on the side of the bird.).. I usually add either a cut up orange or lemon to the inside of the bird, along with garlic, onions, spice rub, etc… then I usually add spices to the skin.. and lemon juice. next, put the bird upside down( yes, upside down), inside the bag as the brown paper bag has already been laid horizontally into your roasting pan. Push down the paper, making sure it does not come anywhere near your oven elements. (the paper bag actually soaks up the excess grease and excess oils, leaving you with clear broth for your gravies)..Then carefully roll up the paper bag a few inches. Next put into an oven preheated at 375 degrees. cook according to bird directions. About 1 hour before timer is up, carefully pull pan from oven and split open top of bag . carefully, usually it is good to have someone help you, turn bird over so breast side is up. put back into oven, with the paper rolled down a bit on sides so top can brown. I usually add some cut up potatoes, onions, lemons, celery, etc into the bag at this point on the sides of turkey in the pan… this way the veggies have opportunity to gain the flavor of everything. you will be soooo happy with this method of cooking your turkey. Blessed thanksgiving everyone!

Our family is large, so we go the ‘everyone pitch in’ route. So as not to get in a rut, every year we have familiar dishes, but also ask some to bring something new. Works great! Dinner is never boring and those who participate like to try new recipes!

We usually cook the turkey at around 4am in time for lunch time. Also we use extra broth to keep it moist and tender rather than dry and not so good. We always use the broth tip and it works every year!

I always put my turkey in a Bag. It is moist and cuts down cooking time too. To make Thanksgiving better, let the past go if it is going to cause an arguement, be thankful to all be together.

My best tip for making Thanksgiving better is to make the side dishes and dessert the night before. I can then save so much time and stress by just taking them out of the frig and rewarming them right before the meal.
