Holiday Gift Guide: Novels for Middle Age Readers

November 28, 2016

As many of you know, we love to read in my home. Putting aside 10-20 minutes each day for your child to read a book will make them become fluent and skilled readers. Both of my children love to read. My daughter is an avid reader and  loves to read just about any book she can find.

The first book that I thought would be interesting for kids to read is THE HAUNTED HOUSE PROJECT written by Tricia Clasen.  This book is about a girl named Andie, who is lost and grieving over the death of  her mom.  Ever since her mom died things at home have been incredibly different and difficult with Andie’s family. She is afraid of what people will say when the truth is revealed of not having enough food or even money in the home. She has some adventures coming her way when a friend of her convinces her to study paranormal activity. An idea popped in her head to pretend to be her mother’s ghost. She does all kinds of strange activities like changing TV channels, spraying various scents throughout the home, and much more.  She does this to make her family think her mother’s spirit is swirling around in the house and to get her family back from not grieving any longer.   This is a beautifully written story about the loss of a person and how one is going through this difficult period in time.  The book retails for $15.99 and is available both at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

The second book A BLIND GUIDE TO NORMAL was written by Beth Vrabel.  It is an incredibly funny story that any child would want to read. The story is about a young boy named Richie “Ryder” Raymond, who has a prosthetic eye and limited vision. He is leaving Addison School for the Blind and he is planning to attend a public school. Ryder  is a very intelligent boy and turns just about everything into a joke. He uses humor and bad puns to deflect attention from himself. This doesn’t go very well at the new school as it did at Addison School for the Blind.  He pushes just about everyone away when they offer him support or even assistance.  This book is about accepting yourself for who you are and to learn how to cope with it.   It retails for $16.99 and is available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble.

I definitely recommend both books for your next holiday gift idea.  Make your children become lifelong readers.

Happy Holidays!
