I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas, and that you all enjoyed spending time with friends, family and lots of delicious snacks and food. This time I will show all of you my Surinamese Christmas dinner I prepared for my family.
I enjoy cooking, especially if I like the food that I am preparing. I also like having the family around. It will make your cooking time so much more enjoyable by having a good conversation, plus they can learn how to cook too.
For a while I have wanted to eat this delicious Surinamese oven dish called Pom. I grew up with this when we would have a big feast celebrating something and especially at Christmas. The main ingredient of Pom, is the root vegetable called Pomtayer. It is native to Suriname and is the only place I have ever found it. So while I was browsing, I came across someone who sold it in America. Yipee!!! Now, after 3 and half years I will finally eat Pom again and couldn’t wait to prepare it.
My Pom Supplies:
Pomtayer (4lbs) 2 pack
1 onion
4 tomatoes ( I love tomatoes in my Pom)
3 tbsp Vinegar
1 tbsp Salt
1/2 tbsp Sugar
1/2 parsley
1 Whole Chicken
1 lemon
2 Bouillon blocks
3/4 cup of water
The pomtayer was frozen so I set it a side to thaw. While it was thawing, I was busy preparing the rest of the items. First I diced the onion and tomatoes. Next, I cut the entire chicken in several pieces and washed in with lemon to get the raw smell out. Once it was done, I seasoned it with salt and half of a bouillon block. Next, I reached for a pan and poured in some oil to fry the chicken. I let it heat up and then gently placed the chicken pieces in the pan. Oh, I just love the sizzling sound of fried chicken. While that was going on it was time to prepare the thawed pomtayer batter.
Now, go ahead and pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees. Get a good size bowl because you will be doing a lot of stirring. I poured in the shredded pomtayer and placed some of the diced tomatoes, onions, vinegar, salt and sugar. Try to taste it back and forth, this way you know if it has a good amount of salt and sugar. Let your taste buds do the job. Once it is done set it aside and attend to your fried chicken. Once the chicken is nicely fried take it out and add the remaining onion, tomatoes and bouillon block to it. Stir back and forth and add a little water to it to make it a little sauce.
Get yourself a baking pan and spray some Pam on it. Then layer the bottom of the pan with half of the pomtayer mixture. Next add the seasoned fried chicken evenly all over the pan, and add some sauce over it. Then pour the remainder of the pomtayer over the chicken. Now, nicely cover with the remaining chicken pieces, and add some more sauce. Then place it in the oven for about 90 minutes. When it gets a nice brown yellowish color you know it is done. I was so excited to see it finished and was ready to eat it.
But I wasn’t done yet, I had a few other items to make before my Surinamese Christmas Dinner was complete. I made some cabbage, Roasted jerk chicken, fried coconut shrimp and deviled eggs too.
Here is the final presentation of my delicious Suriname Christmas Dinner. I hope you enjoy it. Until next time! Happy baking and cooking!
Sincerely,
