A fun educational trip to the museum

January 17, 2016

My son loves anything about dinosaurs and my daughter enjoys science and chemistry. So, today we decided to do something fun with the kids and take them to the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

As always, preparation is the key when you take kids anywhere. Beating the crowds on the weekend is  beneficial so we decided to be out the door by 8:45 to make it to the museum around 10:00 am.  My son gets a little restless so it is better be early then late.

We arrived to the museum on time and walked in. It was a little busy as we entered the first part of the exhibition which was the Wiess Energy Hall.  My daughter is always curious how the development of oil and natural gas is being formed.  This section showed you the process of how energy development is being formed and she was truly amazed by it.  We had a chance to see the Herzstein Foucault Pendulum which is a visual demonstration of the Earth’s rotation. My son was so fascinated of how the pendulum was swinging back and forth.

So far my favorite is the Cullen Hall of Gems and Minerals.  I was literally fascinated about the wonderful colorful gems and minerals.  I saw a huge piece of stibnite and my daughter said it looks so much like a porcupine which I truly agree.  You wouldn’t want to make a mistake and trip and fall on that.  Ouch!

We also can’t leave out the gorgeous jewelry of The Lester and Sue Smith Gem Vault. The absolutely stunning pieces mesmerize you as they sparkle in the dark.

We loved exploring the Hall of Ancient Egypt where we saw some mummification and told the kids it is a fascinating ancient method to preserve a person’s remains. We also had the opportunity to see the magnificent Bust of Nefertiti. Her features are so detailed and absolutely glamorous. As we walked around I saw some  gold finger and toe caps which were definitely something to stare at. Next, it was time to see the Morian Hall of Paleontology to see how big some of these amazing dinosaurs were and to see some ancient fossils from thousands of years ago.

I hope you will take your child to a museum near you and allow them the opportunity to explore and learn about our world and what’s around us.

Sincerely,

My daughter loves everything science or chemistry. We were stuck snowed in for a couple of days and visited our local science museum. Ended up buying a year pass!
