Butterball Turkey Giveaway-CLOSED

smoked turkey

It is that time of year again where we all get ready for that big Thanksgiving Day. I love Thanksgiving because family and friends all come together and share this wonderful day.  It’s a day about giving and what we are thankful for.  I would like to share with you all what I am Thankful for: Family, living in the USA, great friends, food, my health, my home and lots more. I do know some of you have a list as well.  Since we are talking about Thanksgiving, I definitely will talk about how we like to prepare our  turkey at our house.

logo_264_113Another thing I am thankful for is that I don’t have to prepare and cook a big turkey on Thanksgiving. No, my husband handles all that. He loves going to pick out a big Butterball turkey, bring it home, and then perform his seasoning ritual. He always begins by setting the turkey in a brine bath of salt, sugar, garlic powder, and black pepper for around 12 hours. Then he takes it out and dries it. After is has dried out and come to room temperature, he butterflies the turkey and then he massages the turkey with seasoning all over it.  It always looks like he brings out almost every herb and spice jar we have in the pantry. Then it is off to the oven, however he just got a new smoker and is dying to try it out on a big turkey for Thanksgiving. I can’t wait to try it out.

So, I hope you all enjoy the way we prepare our Thanksgiving Turkey and please, share with me any tips on how you prepare your Turkey at your home.  It will be definitely appreciated.

We roast ours in the over. The best tip is to make sure your pan is the right size (sister in law almost caught oven on fire..lol). Also keep it moist. Last year we bought a nifty little needle looking tool and it worked better than the big basters.

  • ellen beck October 31, 2013 at 8:37 am

I use a roaster oven to do my turkey. I guess my best tip is to mke sure you keep it moist by basting and dont cook it so long it turns into leather!

Two-three days out I put the turkey in a bowl while still wrapped and put it in the fridge to thaw. The day before I unwrap it, wash inside and out with lemon and vinegar, season with Adobo inside and out. I put butter and some seasoning under the skin also. I place chopped onion and garlic in the cavity. Thanksgiving morning I take it out of the fridge and allow it to rest for an hour, then put it in the oven, breast side down. When it is half way cooked I turn it over so that the top can brown.

I make a big turkey so make sure to follow the defrosting instructions or the turkey won’t be defrosted. Yikes. Once I have the turkey in the oven then I peel potatoes for mashed potatoes and let them soak in water and alittle bit of milk to keep the potatoes from turning dark. I usually put out my canned stuff the night before as well as cut up all the celery, onions for the stuffing. I love using the turkey bags again follow the directions on the box for the perfect turkey.

  • Theresa M November 4, 2013 at 6:02 am

The canned stuff I set out is the cans themself so I can open then quickly and pour into cooking containers. This is continued from my first comment.

  • SARAH November 5, 2013 at 3:54 pm

What makes thanksgiving SO much better is when it is a pot luck. It shouldn’t’ have to be just one person who makes the meal – so when everyone takes part in it, it should take the stress level down quite a bit.

I roast my turkey in the oven. One important tip is to use a meat thermometer, one that stays in the turkey while it cooks. This lets you know when the turkey reaches the proper temperature.

I roast it in the oven in a cooking bag. I put lots of butter and seasoning under the turkey’s skin to give it flavor.

I always bake mine with lots of stuffing inside. The one tip my brother in law told me years ago to make the turkey very moist was to rub some butter under the skin before cooking. I always do this and the meat is so moist and tender!

I cook my turkey in an oven bag. Thanksgiving is better if everyone brings a favorite dish.

I roast my turkey in the oven, sometimes in a bag to keep it moist. Last year, I learned to rub butter under the skin and make sure to put plenty of seasonings in the cavity. It turned out so tasty!
